Senior Soloists’ Concert

Twelve of our Senior School pupils from Years 7 to 13 performed at last night’s Soloists’ Concert. There was a real mix of music, but songs from the shows took centre stage!

Georgia opened the concert with a striking performance of ‘The Vagabond’ by Vaughan Williams, followed by the first (but not the last!) Disney song of the evening with Tilly singing ‘Part Of Your World’. Charlie’s performance of ‘Castle On A Cloud’ from ‘Les Mis’ captured her character’s sense of loneliness and longing before Emily and Isla took the audience on a magical journey to the North Pole with the Christmas favourite ’Walking In The Air’.

Our journey not complete, our first instrumentalist of the evening, Cynthia continued our journey across the globe performing a Studio Ghibli theme song ‘The Legend of Ashitaka’ on the violin. This was followed by two classical pieces: Katy’s performance of the bel canto aria ’Caro Mio Ben’ was a significant tonal contrast to what had come before and passed us through Italy on our way to France, where Amelie ended our foray into the western classical tradition with an assured rendition of the first movement of François Devienne’s first flute sonata.

Kitty then took to the stage to sing a haunting and tricky melody: ’The Bird’s Lament’, by the 20th-century English composer Richard Rodney Bennett, which paved the way for Rebecca’s powerful rendition of ‘God Help The Outcasts’ from ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ Georgia returned for a second appearance, this time on piano, playing Einaudi’s popular solo piece: ’I Giorni’.

Our evening almost complete, Maisie closed the concert with a comedic performance (which included some interaction with her accompanist!) of Adelaide’s Lament from the show Guys and Dolls. Well done to all the performers who took part in the concert: we now look forward to the Prep Soloists Concert next Thursday at 4.15pm and our Ensembles Concert on 30 November at 7.00pm and hope to see many of you there.
