Music

At The Kingsley School, we aim to inspire children to develop a love with music that will last a lifetime. Along their journey with us – from Prep all the way to Sixth Form – there are a range of opportunities for our students to nurture a passion for music and develop their musical talents.

We believe that music should be accessible for all students, no matter their experience level when they join us. To this end every student in Year 7 learns their choice of flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, or trombone from scratch as part of our Foundation-wide instrumental scheme. Instruments are provided free of charge for the year, and tuition is offered in small groups as part of their curriculum time.

For those who wish to learn an instrument, lessons can be provided on a wide range of instruments either individually or in pairs. Beginners of any age are welcome, and there are a range of opportunities for all players to perform regularly at concerts and events.

Music for Every Student

The platform for a lifelong engagement with music is established in Prep where we have a range of musical initiatives and ensembles. Every pupil learns a string instrument in our Year 3 string scheme and have opportunity to sign up to a wide range of musical ensembles and clubs including recorder, guitar, ukulele, percussion, and brass. Every pupil in the Prep sings together twice a week, and we have a Prep Choir which sings regularly outside of school.

By empowering our young people to sing together from a young age, and to pick up an instrument early on, they have a greater chance to develop into excellent musicians as they grow older with us.

Students across our Prep and Senior Schools have access to a diverse range of ensembles, providing them with opportunities to further develop their musical talents. These include:

Prep Choir
Prep Orchestra
Super Strings
Recorder Ensemble
Drum Ensemble
Senior Choir
Cantus Amoris
String Ensemble
Flute Choir
Swing Band
Junior Wind Band
Baroque Trio
Brass Ensemble
Rock Groups

“Music at Kingsley is amazing. There’s an assortment of different instruments you can learn and improve on. Also, you get to enjoy playing fun and interesting pieces with your friends in music bands.”

Supporting Musical Growth

With our small class sizes and close-knit community, we can proudly say that we truly know each of our pupils individually, and so too we understand their strengths as musicians. This means that we can set up ensembles in such a way that meets their needs and maximises their individual potential.
