Celebrating World Book Day Across Generations

Year 1 pupils from The Kingsley School visited the Priors House Care Home in Old Milverton, Leamington Spa, to participate in a number of intergenerational activities as part of World Book Day on Thursday 7th March.

The pupils and residents shared their favourite books, from ‘Treasure Island’ to ‘The Not-So-Perfect Penguin’, reading sections to each other and discussing the stories. The pupils also shared their own writing, and the whole group joined in a read-along of ‘The Gingerbread Man’, before decorating their own gingerbread man biscuits.

The visit is the latest in a number of intergenerational visits set up between the school and home, with pupils and residents also engaging in activities for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch event and National Reading Week, and residents visiting the school as special guests for performances. Research and recent exposure have shown the mutual positive benefits the interaction between the young and elderly members of the community can have on each other.

Home manager at Care UK’s Priors House, Francine Summers, said: “We were delighted to celebrate World Book Day with The Kingsley School pupils. The communication, interactions and affection between residents and the children was heart-warming to see – they loved spending time with each other.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to involve residents in activities and encourage new friendships, and this session was a great opportunity to create special bonds across the generations – young and older people alike really benefit from the social interaction. We look forward to another visit from the pupils very soon!”

World Book Day celebrations continued back at Kingsley, with a Prep School dress-up, Year 10 students sharing stories with foundation pupils, senior girls attending a ‘book tasting’ session, and Senior School staff arriving to school dressed up as book characters as a surprise for the students.
